Parish General Meeting - PGM

'"The Parish Advisory Council have been considering the option of holding an Annual General Meeting this year. However we have concluded that there may be more benefit in widening the scope and duration of the event into a Parish General Meeting/Event (PGM) to encourage more involvement of all parishioners in the various development activities which are ongoing in the parish. We are therefore proposing to hold the PGM on St Dyfrig's Day, Sunday 14 November 2010.

As we would like the event to be developed with all the parish "purpose" & development groups so that there will be an opportunity to showcase and share the good work of the parish, as well as addressing some of the concerns we have regarding financial pressures etc, a small planning group will be set up. If anyone has any ideas for what they would like to be included in such an event, we will be giving everyone an opportunity to comment on the initial thoughts and ideas of the planning group. The first planning meeting will be in May and further updates for how you can be involved will follow in subsequent newsletters.

We are reliant upon the whole parish to make this event a success".

Meditation - it's not what you think

On May the 15th, in the U.R.C. Church in Windsor Place from 11.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., there will be a presentation on Christian Meditation by Liz Watson. She will explain the simplicity of the practise and a gentle introductory session will be given to be followed, if wanted, by six weekly follow-up sessions to help launch you on a very enriching focus for whatever your prayer preference is.

"We are what we do with silence?"
The Carmelite Order which has done most to preserve the tradition of contemplative prayer in Western Christianity - the Order of Discalced Carmelites.

Father Mathew McGettrick, a Carmelite of a priory in Oxford was concerned in the 60's with the upsurge of interest in Eastern Meditation. He quickly recognised that the contemplative approach to prayer was the training he had received as a novice monk. He became a pioneer in teaching lay people to centre their prayer life around daily dedicated times of being still - to make space for God to come into their lives. Sadly, although attitudes to this practise for lay people are looked on with the greater acceptance now, there still remains among some authorities the idea that this discipline is outside main stream devotion.

John Main became a Benedictine monk after serving with the foreign office in Malaysia. He was told not to continue with the meditation technique he had learnt in Malaysia. He complied. In his monastic formation period he discovered the history of John Cassian. Cassian who was from Romania had travelled from Romania along the Mediterranean coast passing through the Middle East with a fellow seeker Germanus. There, they came into contact with the desert fathers and their prayer methods. Cassian passed across Northern Africa and eventually established monasteries in Gaul - now Southern France. Benedict of Nursia was greatly influenced by Cassian in establishing monastic orders giving rise to the Rule of Benedict.

John Main saw the need for this discipline as a focal point for lay peoples' spiritual growth. Father John Main and Father Lawrence Freeman were invited by the cardinal Archbishop of Montreal to establish a meditation community for lay people in Canada. Since Father John's death in
1982, Father Lawrence has become international director of the World Community for Christian Meditation.

The organisation has spread to North and South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe (East and West).
